Hazel will show – How to start a dog bite prevention program in your community.  How to teach young children about it. What to look for in a dogs posture. How to market the program. Dog bite prevention classes can become an entry into the public school system.   It can help to establish one as an authority on pet care. This seminar will show how to proceed. Speed Scissoring 101

To learn how to scissor faster while improving the quality of your work, don’t miss a minute of this fantastic seminar. Included is “developing the perfect grip”, “finding the ideal shear for you” “pivot point scissoring”, a revolutionary scissor technique that reduces the time required to “set in” proper angulation; “outlining”, a time proven method of defining the shape of the pattern to be placed on the dog; “guide blade scissoring and blending”.  Body position in relationship to the task. A pioneer in the mechanics and art of pet styling, Pam will share her award winning and time proven scissoring techniques and methods. Each participant should bring a pair of shears to practice.

Advanced Skin Care Part 1
Presented by Micah Kohles DMV
We all have the chance to improve the lives of the animals we care for and recognizing common skin issues is a great way to do so. Dr Kohles will cover how to recognize common bacteria, fungus, viruses and how to best care for them without crossing the line into veterinarian territory. He will also look at creepy crawlers (ectoparasites) that have an effect on groomers and their four legged clients.  This lecture will be filled with pictures to help visualize these common issues and then complete the discussion with common treatments and therapies.

How to Safely Groom Cats!!! Part 1
Presented by Danelle German
It’s no secret that cat grooming can be dangerous.  But the dangers can certainly be minimized by using cat-friendly handling techniques and tools. Learn how to quickly and accurately identify a cat’s temperament before it is groomed.   Learn how to bathe, dry, clip and trim a cat in ways that work best with each type of temperament.  Groom cats with confidence and finesse and keep your clients coming back!

The Schnauzer & the Lost Art of Hand Stripping
Presented by Tammy Colbert
Tammy will go over Schnauzer basics and show the mechanics of hand stripping without injury.  This session also studies hair growth to determine when clients should return. Tammy, also a terrier breeder, will demonstrate how to identify the different stages of the dog’s hair growth cycle.

Salon Detail Part 1
Presented by Linda Easton
Linda Easton, ICMG, will present a workshop covering all topics dealing with bathing and drying dogs in a grooming salon. Topics to be covered are bathing and dryers, drying techniques, anatomy, skin, and hair. There will be discussion of blower techniques, dryer types, brushing and brush types and specialized grooming tools used in bathing and drying dogs.  Linda will give tips for stress free grooming and handling difficult dogs.  Trimming of bath dogs and double coated breeds will be discussed and demonstrated.  The pros and cons of clipping double coated breeds will also be explored.

DNA How to Identify That Breed or Not
Presented by Renee Jones Lewis, CPDT-KA
Renee will go into different breed and breed x and their different personality traits, how to approach, what the body language is really telling us, appeasement behaviors!  Identify the breed may not be telling you the TRUE story.  After the DNA results come in we find out  that regardless of how skilled we may be at training or grooming, it is still very often difficult if not impossible to say what breed(s) a dog has in it background

Judy will show different techniques when working on these small breeds and she’ll show you how to make this breed easy for the client to maintain at home.

Salon Detail Part  2
Presented by Linda Easton
In section 2, there will be an introduction to canine behavior and safety for groomers and dogs.  We will cover problems groomers often find with skin care, ears, teeth, etc.  We will also discuss cleaning and sanitation in the salon and ways to help the salon attract and keep customers.  An emphasis will be placed on professionalism and ethics.  In addition, we will cover add-ons such as maintaining show coats, de-shedding, de-matting and finishing touches.

Dr Kohles will continue his skin care in part 2.  He will discuss some of the more common diseases seen in our client’s pets, their impact on skin and hair coat health. He will share his thought on the importance of having a good relationships with a veterinarian and how a positive relationship is a win win situation. He will cover how to prevent cross contamination of contagious skin ailments as well as give an overview of common used medications and topical therapies used to treat skin disease.

Cats:   Know Your Breeds and Their Grooming Needs

Cat groomers are being presented with purebred cats – it is important to understand that each breed requires a “tweak” to their grooming.  For example, a Norwegian Forest Cat may resemble a Maine Coon – however, Newgie’s rarely mat due to the lack of an undercoat.  When you know the purebred requirements, you can “tweak” your grooming to fit any “mix” of cat that comes in to your shop.  Don’t miss the session.

How much should you charge for your grooming services?  We all want to know the answer to this question!  The answer is in your budget!  This workshop will walk participants through the process of creating a business budget.  Bring an estimate of the salon expenses, a calculator, and a pen – worksheets will be provided.  The salon’s expenses and personal information need not be shared if you do not wish.  A sample budget will be prepared to determine what  changes are needed to meet your goals.  This is an enlightening experience!
